Application
Shipping replacement windshield glass to dealers and customers. The company had experienced shipping damage, and was looking for greater product protection than that afforded by existing pallet-based plywood cases, with internal polyurethane fittings provided by their previous supplier. They were also keen to reduce the environmental impact and cost of their packaging operation.
Solution
Macfarlane Packaging proposed and designed a prototype container incorporating an outer shell of heavy-duty export grade corrugated with a hinged lid. This was fitted with timber framed ends, quick-lock fasteners and a pallet base. Each glass screen is supported in its location by Pad-Pak paper cushioning.
Results
After extensive trials, the new design was introduced with excellent results:
- The problems of transit damage have been eliminated, along with replacement manufacturing, packaging and shipping costs.
- The 48% saving in weight by changing from ply to heavy-duty corrugated has resulted in significant savings in freight costs.
- Thanks to the quick-lock fasteners, banding or taping is no longer required.
- The packing process has been speeded up and the packs can now be re-used when required.
- The new lighter weight packs also proved popular with operatives, making packing and unpacking much easier, and reducing the risk of splinters.
With an impressive strength to weight ratio, the Macfarlane Packaging pack not only delivered a higher level of product protection, but helped reduce packaging and transportation costs.
